I recently saw the film I, Tonya starring Margot Robbie as the infamous Tonya Harding. Award-winning actress Allison Janney starred as LaVona Golden, Tonya Harding's abusive mother. Throughout the film, we see Tonya constantly being physically and mentally abused by her mother. I was so taken aback by everything happening in the movie that I must know more; I have to know the truth.
Upon the movie’s release, there’s been buzz for years about whether or not the biopic accurately described the abuse that Tonya was put through. The ABC News two-hour special Truth and Lies: The Tonya Harding Story provided more questions than answers TBH. In the film, Harding is shown being beaten by her mother and even being accidentally impaled by a steak knife. Obviously Golden is saying that she never threw a knife at her daughter. “Why would I throw a steak knife at anybody?” she said in the recent Tonya Harding TV special. Golden also added that, “[Harding has] lied so much she doesn’t know what isn’t a lie anymore.” Throughout both the film and the TV special, everyone seems to be remembering things differently. Harding, her ex-husband Jeff Gillooly (played by the oh-so-handsome Sebastian Stan) and Golden all tell various contradicting versions of EVERYTHING making them all unreliable narrators.
So, what’s the truth?
P.S. - If you haven't seen the film, it's definitely worth the watch!
