Go See "Lady Bird" and then Go See Your Mom

This past Friday night, my eyes were glued to the big screen as I finally watched Greta Gerwig's Lady Bird. Played by the sensational Saoirse Ronan, Christine “Lady Bird” McPherson fights against but is exactly like her wildly loving, deeply opinionated and strong-willed mother, Marion (played by Laurie Metcalf), a nurse working tirelessly to keep her family afloat after Lady Bird's father (played by Tracy Letts) loses his job. Set in Sacramento, California in 2002, during a declining American economy, Lady Bird is an emotional look at the relationships that shape us, the beliefs that define us, and the unparalleled beauty of a place called home. While there are many focuses in the film, Lady Bird is centered around the bond between a mother and her teenage daughter.
Lady Bird and her mother do not have the the best mother-daughter relationship at all. You see their tumultuous relationship play-out in the film. They argue, disagree, passively attack each other and if they're lucky, they agree on something. They spend majority of the film on the outs of their relationship, but Gerwig does a great job giving the audience those few on-screen moments that show how much Marion cares. Lady Bird asks her mother, "Do you like me?" and her mother responds with, "I just want you to be the best version of yourself you can be." Nearing the end of the film, Lady Bird and her mother are not speaking at all. We had seen their tumultuous relationship throughout the film, but nothing this drastic; her mother didn't even see her off to college (which was located on the other side of the country). That scene broke my heart. Seeing her mother breakdown and Lady Bird finally seeing just how much her mother really does love her made me realize how much I needed to go see my own mother and just tell her #ThankYou and #iLoveYou.
Check out the trailer below and if you haven't seen it, I highly recommend seeing Lady Bird! #HopefullyLadyBirdWinsTheOscarForBestPicture
